Creation of and facts about the aerial tramway at the Lünersee
As with most cableways, the Lünerseebahn was developed during the construction of a power plant.
At the beginning of the 1950s, the Vorarlberg Illwerke commissioned the construction of a cable car to provide access to the construction site and to transport materials to Lünersee. After completion of the construction work, the installation was adapted for public transportation.
The history of the Lünerseebahn
1959

On June 22, 1959, the then Federal Minister granted the concession to operate a single-track cable car with shuttle service from Schattenlagant to Lake Lünersee with a cabin for 30 people.
Instead of the cabin, a material platform for 3 tons was available for transporting materials. Heavy loads of up to 6 tons could be transported using additional hangers.
from 1960
As the Lünersee became a popular excursion destination, modifications were made to the installation in the 1960s and 1970s to increase passenger transport. The cabin was renewed and now had a capacity of 50 people.
1993
In 1993, a new cabin was purchased, which provided more comfort for passengers and was state of the art. The cabin could accommodate 47 passengers.
1995
This year, the hauling rope was relaunched.
1997
The suspension cable was replaced.
2004
In 2004, the entire drive and brake unit was completely rebuilt by Doppelmayr from Wolfurt.
2007/2008
The valley and mountain station buildings were renovated in 2007 and 2008. The WC facilities as well as the entrances and exits were made barrier-free. The drinking water supply in the mountain station was also renewed.
2009
At the end of October 2009, the railroad received a new undercarriage from the Steurer company in Doren.
The acquisition of a self-propelled recovery vehicle from the Reisch company in Frastanz completes the extensive conversion work carried out in recent years.
2019
In September 2019, the go-ahead was given for the renewal of the Lünerseebahn. The old Lünerseebahn had been in operation for 60 years. As the cable car's concession expired after around 60 years, the Lünerseebahn was renewed.
2020
On August 8, the Lünerseebahn NEU is put into operation.

Lünersee und Lünerseebahn
The Lünerseebahn is an aerial tramway and connects the valley station at the end of the Brandnertal valley to the summit station at the dam of the Lünersee. After approx. just 6 minutes, you reach the pearl of the Alps, Lünersee, at approx. 1,970 m above sea level. It is one of the largest mountain lakes in Vorarlberg and also the largest reservoir for power generation.
At the time of its commissioning in 1958, the Lünerseewerk was the most powerful pumped storage power station in the world. The Lünersee is approx. 112 hectares and has a maximum filling volume of 78.3 million m³.
